About me
I immigrated to Montreal at the age of 10 and spent my teenage years in Pointe Claire, a suburb west of the city. I studied at Loyola College and McGill University, then worked for book and magazine publishers until I found my dream job, in newspapers. These were golden years, before corporate ownership and technology decimated newsrooms, and I was lucky enough to spend my working life as an editor at several major Canadian daily newspapers and as a columnist and feature writer. During that time, I wrote freelance magazine articles and became a part-time faculty member in the department of journalism at Concordia University.
I am the author of Womankind: Faces of Change Around the World, with photographer Nance Ackerman. I conceived and wrote the documentary Twice Upon a Garden, and the environmental blog Earthbound. I am a devoted, though somewhat undisciplined, practitioner of yoga. Mother of two adult children, I live with my husband in Montreal and Big Tancook Island, Nova Scotia.
Other works

Womankind is a tribute to inspiring women leaders and activists striving to effect real change in the daily lives of their communities. Stunning duotone photographs and profiles highlight the challenges and dangers these women have faced as well as their impressive achievements, their relentless determination, and their hope for the future. The book features women from more than thirty countries on five continents—some internationally famous, others little known outside their own communities, all of them fighting in courageous and creative ways for human rights, social justice, women’s equality, environmental preservation, and cultural freedom.
